Soil fills the pot above the tray. Water from the top the first time so it settles.

The tray insert holds the soil up and keeps roots out of standing water.

The reservoir under the tray holds water. A column of soil dips into it, so water soaks back up to the roots.

The overflow hole is yours to drill, at the indentation molded into the side. Extra water runs out there instead of flooding the soil.

The bottom knockouts stay closed. Punching them out turns it into an ordinary planter for good.

The first time, water from the top until the soil is evenly damp. After that, water whenever the surface dries out; water running out of the side hole tells you the reservoir is full. Indoors, stand a drilled planter on a saucer, because the overflow hole will drip.
